HOW TO PREPARE FOR AN MRI

The process of preparation is a very easy one. As a rule, no special preparation is necessary. However, just in case, please check with a staff member before your MRI examination.

A careful screening is conducted a few times before the MRI examination. This is done because of the strength of the magnet. In order to appreciate the strength of the magnet, one could compare the strength of the earth’s magnetic field (.3 to .7 Tesla), to a high field scanner’s magnetic force (15,000 Tesla). It is imperative that the staff get a clear medical history and screening before each exam.

Some people are unable to undergo an MRI examination because of past medical or surgical history. Our staff needs to be informed if you have had any of the following :

  • Surgical aneurysm clip of the brain.

  • Pacemaker

  • Cochlear (middle ear implants)

  • Metal fragments (including bullets and shrapnel)

  • Implanted insulin pump

  • Metal particles or chips in your eyes

  • Retinal tacks

  • Any other magnetically activated biomedical device such as a defibrillator or eye implant

  • Any body piercing

  • Any chance of pregnancy
